Bass Pro Shops was founded in 1972 by John L. Morris, a hunter and fisherman who had been a competitive field trial champion that bred Labrador Retrievers.

In 1967, while out of the country on an upland bird hunting trip in northern California, he came across a surplus store near Sacramento selling duck calls for $2.50.

He bought all they had and sold them for a profit in his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri.

From this small beginning, he developed a mail-order catalogue from which customers ordered through the newly invented 800 number at a rate of four calls per hour during prime time.

In 1972, Bass Pro Shops moved from a small Liquor Barn storefront to his dad’s liquor store, renamed Bass Pro Shop.

In response, Thomas Millner, president and CEO of the Texas State Rifle Association, criticized the station’s management for refusing to advertise.

Interestingly, a radio station in the home of country music would declare that its listeners won’t shop or listen to an advertiser because they sell guns and ammo,” Millner stated.
